RBQ Preparatory Training
2.2 Contractor for non-drilled water collection structures
a training session lasting 2 hours
This training course prepares contractors to carry out groundwater collection projects without drilling, such as surface wells, gelatinite wells, spring collection systems, and filter points. You will learn how to perform work in compliance with the standards of the Regulation respecting the abstraction and protection of water (R.S.Q., c. Q-2, r. 35.2), administered by the Ministry of the Environment.
Essential for those who wish to specialize in the installation and rehabilitation of water supply systems, this training program will equip you with the skills needed to ensure the quality, safety, and sustainability of non-drilled water collection structures throughout Quebec.

TRAINING RBQ PREPARATORY COURSE
The module is divided into four main topics covered in the three-hour RBQ exam for subcategory 2.2:
- Definitions and types of systems: Units of measurement, technical terminology related to water collection structures (annular space, collection drain, driving shoe), soil characterization, and analysis of water requirements and static/dynamic water levels.
- Legal and regulatory framework: The roles of municipalities and the ministry in permit approval, material compliance standards (ASTM), and adherence to safety margins regarding sources of contamination (wastewater treatment systems).
- Plans and estimates: Interpretation of cross-sectional details of the installation and determination of the optimal and safe location for the structure (even in the absence of formal plans) based on the vulnerability of the aquifer formations.
- Standards and project execution: Selection of techniques for constructing a surface well or a filter tip, management of the annular space, conducting pumping tests, cleaning, disinfection, and preparation of reports including geographic coordinates (GPS).

More specifically, it aims to improve participants’ knowledge and reinforce the importance of effective project management for contractors carrying out work related to:
- The fundamental concepts related to the hydrological cycle, aquifers, water requirements (instantaneous flow, average flow), as well as various types of non-drilled structures such as surface wells, filter pits, and spring intakes.
- The legislative, regulatory, and normative framework, particularly a thorough understanding of the Groundwater Abstraction Regulations and the Environmental Quality Act.
- Reading and interpreting plans, specifications, and site sketches to properly plan the location of a water intake structure while complying with regulatory distances.
- The proper execution of construction work related to gelinite wells, vacuum-dug surface wells, filter points, and well sealing.
- Standards for sealing unused structures, bringing existing wells up to code, and strictly enforcing health and safety regulations on the job site (equipment management, power lines, dust).
