THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS TRAINING

The primary objective of this training is to enhance general knowledge of construction and enable owner-builders or contractors to apply best practices. More specifically, it aims to improve participants’ knowledge and reinforce the importance of effective project management for those responsible for carrying out construction work related to:

  • The fundamentals of electrical systems, including fire detection systems (thermal, smoke), types of signals (alarm, warning, monitoring), and alarm networks (normal and emergency power sources, Class A and B circuits).
  • The legislative, regulatory, and standard-setting framework, as well as the strict delineation of the work performed by each contractor on a construction site (master electricians, ventilation contractors, or refrigeration contractors).
  • Reading and interpreting blueprints, electrical diagrams, and specifications to fully understand the scope of the systems, identify dimensions, and analyze the symbols associated with instrumentation and control systems.
  • The proper execution of work related to new electrical installations, the renovation of existing systems, and the connection of specific devices (water heaters, motors, baseboard heaters, heating cables).
  • The safe connection of these distribution systems to the electric utility’s grid or any other power source.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Subcategory 16.0
: Electrical Contractor

Subcategory 16 (Electrical Contractor) is a specialized contractor’s license (or owner-builder license). It authorizes the construction of electrical installations, that is, underground, above-ground, or in-building wiring for the transmission of power, lighting, or heating using electrical energy. This work is reserved exclusively for master electricians under the Master Electricians Act.

To obtain this license, the prospective licensee must pass the core curriculum exams (Administration, Construction Site Safety Management, Project and Site Management) as well as the specific exam on Construction Work Execution (ETC) for subcategory 15.2. Note that the oversight of this specialty also involves the Corporation des maîtres mécaniciens en tuyauterie du Québec (CMMTQ).

This license authorizes a wide range of electrical work, including the renovation of existing systems and the connection of electrical systems to the utility grid or another power source. It also permits the connection of electrical appliances and the installation of alarm systems (fire, intrusion) and control networks.

The RBQ’s work performance exam, which lasts three hours, is divided into four main sections:

  • Definitions and types of systems.
  • The legislative, normative, and regulatory framework.
  • Reading blueprints and specifications.
  • Standards and the execution of the work.
