Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Subcategory 15.8
: Ventilation Contractor
What is subcategory 15.8 of the RBQ?
Subcategory 15.8 is a specialized contractor’s license that authorizes construction work on air circulation or distribution systems. This specifically includes ventilation, exhaust, air balancing, and air conditioning, with the exception of work reserved exclusively for master plumbing mechanics.
Which RBQ exams are required for subcategory 15.8?
To serve as a guarantor for Construction Work (ETC) in this specialty, you must pass a multiple-choice theory exam developed by the RBQ. This exam lasts a maximum of 3 hours, and the passing score is 60%. (Note: As with any contractor, the core exams in administration, safety management, and project management also apply.)
What other types of work are included in subcategory 15.8?
As a contractor holding subclass 15.8, your license allows you to perform other specific types of work:
- Installation of ductwork and heating units for a forced-air system (including air conditioning).
- The installation of equipment for heating and air conditioning in a forced-air system, provided that the individual also holds subcategory 15.9 or 15.10.
- All construction work that is considered similar or related.
What skills are assessed in exam 15.8?
The exam specific to subcategory 15.8 is based on a detailed competency profile, divided into four modules.
You will be evaluated on your ability to:
- Define the principles of ventilation (thermal, air quality, mathematical and aerodynamic calculations).
- Place the work within the context of the relevant laws and standards (Quebec Building Code, ASHRAE, CSA, etc.).
- Read and interpret drawings, understand cost estimates, and assess costs and system capabilities.
- Manage the execution of work, including the safe installation, commissioning, balancing, and maintenance of the units.
