Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Subcategory 15.5
: Plumbing Contractor
What is subcategory 15.5 of the RBQ?
Subcategory 15.5 (Plumbing Contractor) is a specialized contractor’s license. It authorizes construction work—limited exclusively to master pipefitters—related to plumbing systems in any building or structure. This includes piping and fittings used for drainage, drainage systems, back-ventilation of traps, as well as hot water, cold water, or gas supply systems.
Which RBQ exams are required for subcategory 15.5?
To obtain this license, the prospective licensee must pass the core curriculum exams (Administration, Construction Site Safety Management, Project and Site Management) as well as the specific exam on Construction Work Execution (ETC) for subcategory 15.5. Note that for contractors, the Corporation des maîtres mécaniciens en tuyauterie du Québec (CMMTQ) is responsible for certifying its members for this subcategory.
What other types of work are included in subcategory 15.5?
In addition to standard plumbing work, this license specifically authorizes the installation of water meters, water treatment systems (water softeners, filters), garbage disposals, gas supply lines, solar thermal collectors, and sump pumps, as well as the installation and replacement of water heaters. It naturally includes all related construction work.
What skills are assessed on the ETC 15.5 exam?
The inspection of the work is divided into four main categories:
- Definitions and types of plumbing systems.
- The legislative, regulatory, and normative framework (including the Master Plumber Act).
- Reading drawings and specifications specific to piping.
- Standards and construction work (sanitary drainage systems, stormwater systems, venting of traps, water supply systems).
