: Oil Burner System Contractor
1. What is subcategory 15.3 of the RBQ?
Subcategory 15.3 (Oil Burner Systems Contractor) is a specialized contractor’s license. It authorizes construction work involving the installation, modification, repair, or maintenance of oil-fired burner systems (including fuel oil), including tanks, fuel lines, pumps, control devices, and related accessories.
Which RBQ exams are required for subcategory 15.3?
To obtain this license, the prospective licensee must pass the core curriculum exams (Administration, Construction Site Safety Management, Project and Site Management) as well as the specific exam on Construction Work Execution (ETC) for subcategory 15.3. Note that the oversight of this specialty also involves the Corporation des maîtres mécaniciens en tuyauterie du Québec (CMMTQ).
What other types of work are included in subcategory 15.3?
This license focuses specifically on oil-fired systems. It naturally includes all similar or related construction work required for these systems, such as the safe installation of fuel oil tanks, the installation of distribution piping, and the proper connection for the venting of combustion gases associated with this equipment.
4. What skills are assessed on the ETC 15.3 exam?
The RBQ’s work performance review evaluates two main areas:
- Planning and organizing work (25%): Reading and interpreting plans and specifications; knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and standards (including the Code for the Installation of Oil-Fired Appliances – CSA B139).
- Perform the work (75%): Install tanks and piping, connect and adjust burners, conduct combustion tests, and strictly adhere to health, safety, and environmental protection regulations (spill prevention).
