Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Subcategory 15.2
: Natural Gas Burner System Contractor
What is Subcategory 15.2 of the RBQ?
Subcategory 15.2 (Natural Gas Burner Systems Contractor) is a specialized contractor’s license. It authorizes construction work involving the installation, modification, repair, or maintenance of natural gas burner systems, including piping, valves, control devices, and related accessories.
Which RBQ exams are required for subcategory 15.2?
To obtain this license, the prospective licensee must pass the core curriculum exams (Administration, Construction Site Safety Management, Project and Site Management) as well as the specific exam on Construction Work Execution (ETC) for subcategory 15.2. Note that the oversight of this specialty also involves the Corporation des maîtres mécaniciens en tuyauterie du Québec (CMMTQ).
What other types of work are included in subcategory 15.2?
Under current regulations, the holder of a 15.2 license may also perform construction work covered by subcategory 15.2.1 (Propane Burner Systems Contractor) and subcategory 15.3 (Oil Burner Systems Contractor). This naturally includes all similar or related construction work.
What skills are assessed on the ETC 15.2 exam?
The RBQ’s inspection of work completion consists of two main components:
- Plan and organize work (25%): Read and interpret plans and specifications; have a thorough understanding of the laws, regulations, and standards applicable to natural gas.
- Perform the work (75%): Install heating equipment, connect piping, check pressure levels, ensure compliance with flue gas venting standards, and strictly adhere to health and safety regulations on the job site.
