THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS TRAINING

Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the principles of fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and the various components of forced-air heating systems;
  • Enforce applicable regulations, including the Building Code (Chapters I, II, and III – Gas) and industry standards (CSA, ASHRAE);
  • Accurately interpret plans, drawings, and technical specifications related to building mechanical systems and plumbing;
  • Properly size fuel lines, air distribution ducts, and flue gas exhaust systems using precise calculations;
  • Ensure that all work is performed safely, from fuel storage (heating oil, propane) through to the initial startup of equipment;
  • Ensure the structural integrity of the building (firewalls, joists) where ducts pass through, and maintain the required clearances from combustible materials.

This training program is designed to prepare contractors to serve as responsible parties for subcategory 15.1, ensuring proficiency in industry standards, the interpretation of blueprints, and the safe execution of work related to forced-air heating systems.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Subcategory 15.1
: Forced-air heating system contractor

Subcategory 15.1, “Owner-Builder of Forced-Air Heating Systems,” authorizes construction work related to forced-air heating systems. It includes work reserved exclusively for master plumbing mechanics under the Master Plumbing Mechanics Act, as well as work related to propane burner systems.

To act as a guarantor for this subcategory, you must pass a multiple-choice theory exam developed by the RBQ. This exam lasts up to 3 hours. The passing score is 60%. (Note: As with any general or specialized contractor, the core exams in administration, safety management, and project management also apply.)

This license also authorizes work covered under subcategory 15.1.1, as well as related construction work. In addition, it allows for work on forced-air systems that combine heating and air conditioning, provided that the contractor also holds the appropriate subcategory 15.9 or 15.10 for the air conditioning portion.

The exam assesses four main areas of expertise: knowledge of the definitions and different types of forced-air systems; understanding of the legal, standard, and regulatory framework; the ability to read plans and specifications (including estimating and calculating heat loss); and the application of standards during the execution of work.
