Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Subcategory 15.1
: Forced-air heating system contractor
What is subcategory 15.1 of the RBQ?
Subcategory 15.1, “Owner-Builder of Forced-Air Heating Systems,” authorizes construction work related to forced-air heating systems. It includes work reserved exclusively for master plumbing mechanics under the Master Plumbing Mechanics Act, as well as work related to propane burner systems.
Which RBQ exams are required for subcategory 15.1?
To act as a guarantor for this subcategory, you must pass a multiple-choice theory exam developed by the RBQ. This exam lasts up to 3 hours. The passing score is 60%. (Note: As with any general or specialized contractor, the core exams in administration, safety management, and project management also apply.)
What other types of work are included in subcategory 15.1?
This license also authorizes work covered under subcategory 15.1.1, as well as related construction work. In addition, it allows for work on forced-air systems that combine heating and air conditioning, provided that the contractor also holds the appropriate subcategory 15.9 or 15.10 for the air conditioning portion.
What skills are assessed in Exam 15.1?
The exam assesses four main areas of expertise: knowledge of the definitions and different types of forced-air systems; understanding of the legal, standard, and regulatory framework; the ability to read plans and specifications (including estimating and calculating heat loss); and the application of standards during the execution of work.
