6.1 - Timber frames contractor

Subcategory 6.1 (Wood framing contractor) is a specialized contractor licence that authorizes a company to carry out or have carried out construction work specifically related to wood structures.

To act as guarantor for Execution of construction work (ETC) for this subcategory, you must pass a specific RBQ theory exam. It is a multiple-choice exam lasting 3 hours, with a required passing grade of 60 %. (Note: as for any contractor, the core exams in administration, safety management and project management also apply.)

As a contractor holding subcategory 6.1, your licence entitles you to carry out additional work. It automatically authorizes the construction work included in subcategory 6.2 (Wood and plastic work contractor) of Schedule III. It also allows you to carry out all construction work considered similar or related.

The exam specific to subcategory 6.1 is based on a precise skills profile. You will be assessed on your technical ability to:

• Define the types of structures and their components, and understand the impact of the various loads (snow, wind, lateral loads).
• Situate the work in relation to the applicable codes and standards (Quebec Construction Code, CSA standards).
