15.5 - Plumbing contractor

Subcategory 15.5 (Plumbing contractor) is a specialized contractor licence. It authorizes construction work, reserved exclusively for master pipe mechanics, related to plumbing systems in any building or structure. This includes the piping and fittings used for drainage, sewage, trap back-venting, and the supply of hot water, cold water or gas.

To obtain this licence, the future guarantor must pass the common core exams (Administration, Job Site Safety Management, Project and Job Site Management) as well as the specific Execution of Construction Work (ETC) exam for subcategory 15.5. Note that for contractors, the Corporation des maîtres mécaniciens en tuyauterie du Québec (CMMTQ) is responsible for qualifying its members for this subcategory.

In addition to standard plumbing, this licence notably authorizes the installation of water meters, water treatment systems (softeners, filters), garbage disposals, gas supply piping, solar thermal collectors, sump and ejector pumps for drains, as well as the installation and replacement of water heaters. It of course includes all related construction work.

The execution of work exam is divided into four main themes:

• Definitions and types of plumbing systems.
• Legislative, normative and regulatory framework (including the Act respecting master pipe mechanics).
• Reading plans and specifications specific to piping.
• Standards and execution of the work (sanitary drainage systems, storm water, trap venting, water supply systems).
