Frequently asked questions

15.4 - Hydronic heating systems

What is RBQ subcategory 15.4?

Subcategory 15.4 (Hydronic heating systems) is a specialized contractor (or owner-builder) licence. It authorizes construction work related to hydronic heating systems. This work is reserved exclusively for master pipe mechanics under the law.

Which RBQ exams are mandatory for subcategory 15.4?

To obtain this licence, the future guarantor must pass the core exams (Administration, Safety management on construction sites, Project and job site management) as well as the specific Execution of construction work (ETC) exam for subcategory 15.4. Note that the oversight of this specialty also involves the Corporation des maîtres mécaniciens en tuyauterie du Québec (CMMTQ).

What other types of work are included in subcategory 15.4?

Under current regulations, the holder of a 15.4 licence may also carry out construction work related to propane burner systems as well as the work included in subcategory 15.4.1. It also authorizes work on hydronic systems that provide both heating and air conditioning, provided the contractor also holds the appropriate subcategory 15.9 or 15.10. Finally, it includes all related construction work.

What skills are assessed in the ETC 15.4 exam?

The RBQ execution of work exam, which lasts 3 hours, is divided into four main assessment themes:

  • Definitions and types of systems.
  • Legislative, normative and regulatory framework.
  • Reading plans and specifications.
  • Standards and execution of the work.
