  • Legislative and regulatory framework: roles of certification bodies (ANSI, ASME, CSA), scope of the codes (Building, Gas, Plumbing), the Environment Quality Act, and the RBQ's specific role regarding welding.
  • Reading plans and specifications: interpretation of installation-specific symbols, reading sections, notes and plan details, and analysis of general and special conditions in construction specifications.

Frequently asked questions

11.1 - Industrial or institutional piping contractor

What is RBQ subcategory 11.1?

Subcategory 11.1 (Contractor for industrial or institutional pressure piping) is a specialized contractor licence. It authorizes construction work that is not reserved exclusively for master pipe mechanics and that relates to the installation of pressure piping for industrial or institutional purposes, as well as similar or related construction work.

Which RBQ exams are mandatory for subcategory 11.1?

To obtain this licence, the future guarantor must pass the common core exams (Administration, Job Site Safety Management, Project and Job Site Management) as well as the specific Execution of Construction Work (ETC) exam for subcategory 11.1. Note that, unlike other licences related to plumbing or heating, this work is not the exclusive domain of the Corporation des maîtres mécaniciens en tuyauterie du Québec (CMMTQ).

What other types of work are included in subcategory 11.1?

This licence notably authorizes work related to piping in wastewater treatment plants, water filtration plants and power stations. It also covers compressors, compressed air and the anchors associated with these systems. (Automatic water sprinkler systems, however, require subcategory 13.3.)

What skills are assessed in the ETC 11.1 exam?

The RBQ execution of work exam, which lasts 3 hours, is divided into four main assessment themes:

  • Definitions and types of systems.
  • Legislative, normative and regulatory framework.
  • Reading and interpreting plans and specifications.
  • Standards and execution of the work.
