Health and safety (OHS) on your job sites

Occupational health and safety (OHS) covers all the measures, practices, laws and regulations that aim to:

• protect workers' health (prevention of occupational diseases);
• ensure safety (reduction and management of accident risks);
• promote well-being in the workplace.

In practice, this includes:

• identifying and managing risks on job sites;
• providing personal protective equipment (PPE);
• prevention training;
• investigations after workplace accidents;
• the legal obligations of employers and workers.

Goal: prevent work-related accidents and illnesses and ensure a healthy, safe environment for everyone.

• Workers: follow the rules, use PPE, report hazards.
• Employers and contractors: put prevention measures in place, provide training and PPE, keep the premises safe.
• Foremen and supervisors: lead the teams, identify and correct hazards, apply procedures.
• OHS representatives (committees, worker representatives): take part in prevention, represent workers, work with the employer.
• Sector associations and regulators (e.g. CNESST): oversee, monitor and support the application of laws and regulations.

In short: OHS is a shared responsibility that prevents accidents, protects health and keeps job sites running smoothly.
