Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Subcategory 11.1
: Contractor for industrial or institutional pressure piping
What is subcategory 11.1 of the RBQ?
Subcategory 11.1 (Industrial or Institutional Pressure Piping Contractor) is a specialized contractor’s license. It authorizes construction work that is not exclusively reserved for master piping mechanics and that involves the installation of pressure piping for industrial or institutional purposes, as well as similar or related construction work.
Which RBQ exams are required for subcategory 11.1?
To obtain this license, the prospective licensee must pass the core curriculum exams (Administration, Construction Site Safety Management, Project and Site Management) as well as the specific exam on Construction Work Execution (ETC) for subcategory 11.1. Note that, unlike other licenses related to plumbing or heating, these works are not the exclusive domain of the Corporation des maîtres mécaniciens en tuyauterie du Québec (CMMTQ).
What other types of work are included in subcategory 11.1?
This license authorizes, among other things, work related to piping in wastewater treatment plants, filtration plants, and power plants. It also covers compressors, compressed air systems, and the fasteners associated with these systems. (Automatic water sprinkler systems, however, require subcategory 13.3.)
What skills are assessed on the ETC 11.1 exam?
The RBQ’s on-site work inspection, which lasts three hours, is divided into four main evaluation categories:
- Definitions and types of systems.
- The legislative, normative, and regulatory framework.
- Reading and interpreting plans and specifications.
- Standards and the execution of the work.
