16.0 - Electrical contractor

Subcategory 16 (Electrical contractor) is a specialized contractor (or owner-builder) licence. It authorizes the construction work of an electrical installation, that is, underground, above-ground or in-building wiring for the transmission of motive power, lighting or heating by electrical energy. This work is reserved exclusively for master electricians under the Act respecting master electricians.

To obtain this licence, the future guarantor must pass the core exams (Administration, Safety management on construction sites, Project and job site management) as well as the specific Execution of construction work (ETC) exam for subcategory 15.2. Note that the oversight of this specialty also involves the Corporation des maîtres mécaniciens en tuyauterie du Québec (CMMTQ).

This licence authorizes a wide range of electrical work, including the refurbishment of existing installations and the connection of the electrical installation to the distributor's network or to another power source. It also allows the connection of electrical appliances and the installation of alarm systems (fire, intrusion) and control networks.

The RBQ execution of work exam, which lasts 3 hours, is divided into four main themes:

• Definitions and types of systems.
• Legislative, normative and regulatory framework.
• Reading plans and specifications.
• Standards and execution of the work.
