15.8 - Ventilation contractor

Subcategory 15.8 is a specialized contractor licence that authorizes construction work related to air circulation or distribution systems. This specifically includes ventilation, exhaust, make-up air and air conditioning, with the exception of work reserved exclusively for master pipe mechanics.

To act as guarantor for execution of construction work (ETC) for this specialty, you must pass a multiple-choice theory exam designed by the RBQ. This exam lasts a maximum of 3 hours and the passing grade is 60 %. (Note: As for any contractor, the common core exams in administration, safety management and project management also apply.)

As a contractor holding subcategory 15.8, your licence allows you to carry out other specific work:

• Installing duct networks and heating appliances for a forced-air system (including air conditioning).
• Installing the appliances that provide heating and air conditioning for a forced-air system, on the strict condition that you also hold subcategory 15.9 or 15.10.
• All so-called similar or related construction work.

The exam specific to subcategory 15.8 is based on a precise competency profile, divided into four modules.

You will be assessed on your ability to:

• Define the principles of ventilation (thermal, air quality, mathematical and airflow calculations).
• Situate the work within the legislative and normative framework (Quebec Construction Code, ASHRAE, CSA, etc.).
• Read and interpret plans, understand specifications and estimate costs as well as system capacities.
• Manage the execution of the work, including safe installation, start-up, balancing and maintenance of the units.
