15.3 - Oil burner systems contractor

Subcategory 15.3 (Oil burner systems contractor) is a specialized contractor licence. It authorizes construction work related to the installation, modification, repair or maintenance of oil-fired (fuel oil) burner systems, including tanks, supply piping, pumps, control devices and related accessories.

To obtain this licence, the future guarantor must pass the common core exams (Administration, Job Site Safety Management, Project and Job Site Management) as well as the specific Execution of Construction Work (ETC) exam for subcategory 15.3. Note that the oversight of this specialty also involves the Corporation des maîtres mécaniciens en tuyauterie du Québec (CMMTQ).

This licence focuses specifically on oil-fired systems. It naturally includes all similar or related construction work required for these systems, such as the safe installation of fuel oil tanks, the installation of distribution piping and the proper connection for venting the combustion gases associated with this equipment.

The RBQ execution of construction work exam assesses two main components:

• Planning and organizing the work (25 %): Reading and interpreting plans and specifications, command of the applicable laws, regulations and standards (notably the Installation Code for Oil-Burning Equipment - CSA B139).
• Executing the work (75 %): Installing tanks and piping, connecting and adjusting burners, combustion tests, and strict application of health, safety and environmental protection rules (spill prevention).
