This course aims to prepare contractors to act as guarantor for subcategory 15.1, ensuring mastery of the standards, plan reading and safe execution of work related to forced-air heating systems.
15.1 - Forced-air heating systems contractor
Subcategory 15.1, "Owner-builder for forced-air heating systems", authorizes construction work related to forced-air heating systems. It includes work reserved exclusively for master pipe mechanics under the Act respecting master pipe-mechanics, as well as work related to propane burner systems.
To act as guarantor for this subcategory, you must pass a multiple-choice theory exam designed by the RBQ. This exam lasts a maximum of 3 hours. The required passing grade is 60 %. (Note: as for any general or specialized contractor, the core exams in administration, safety management and project management also apply.)
This licence also authorizes the work included in subcategory 15.1.1, as well as related construction work. It also allows work on forced-air systems combining heating and air conditioning, on the strict condition that the contractor also holds the appropriate subcategory 15.9 or 15.10 for the air conditioning portion.
The exam assesses four main areas of competency: knowledge of the definitions and the different types of forced-air systems, command of the legislative, normative and regulatory framework, the ability to read plans and specifications (including estimating and heat loss calculations), and the application of standards during the execution of the work.
