Frequently asked questions

1.4 - Roads and pipelines contractor

What is RBQ subcategory 1.4?

Subcategory 1.4 (Roads and sewer and water mains) is a specialty attached to the general contractor licence. It authorizes a business to carry out or have carried out specific civil engineering work, such as the construction of roads, public roadways, sewers, water mains, pipelines and railway works.

Which RBQ exams are mandatory to obtain subcategory 1.4?

Since 1.4 falls under the general contractor licence, you must pass several exams. You will first have to pass the core exams (Administration, Safety management on construction sites, and Project and job site management). Then you will have to pass the specific Execution of construction work (ETC) exam for subcategory 1.4.

What other types of work are included with subcategory 1.4?

As a general contractor holding subcategory 1.4, you are authorized to carry out work under several other subcategories, provided it is part of your civil engineering project. This includes concrete (3.1), masonry (4.1), steel (5.1) and wood (6.1) structures. You can also subcontract work on submerged civil engineering structures (1.6).

What skills are assessed in the RBQ 1.4 exam?

The exam specific to subcategory 1.4 is based on the RBQ competency profile. You will be assessed on your technical ability to

  • Understand in depth the work to be done (excavation and grading, sewer and water mains, paving, etc.).
  • Explain the concepts and technical terms related to civil engineering job sites.
  • Master the fields of application specific to road and underground engineering.
  • Know and apply the Building Act and the regulations in force on safety and compliance.
